Аннотация: ^UThe purpose of the article – to identify and analyze the origins of library education in Ukraine and the contribution of prominent librarians to its further development. The methodology is based on a combination of the principles of scientific objectivity and historicism, the use of a structural-functional approach, and general scientific methods. Scientific novelty. The origins of personnel training for the system of document and information communications in Ukraine at the beginning of the 20th century have been studied, primarily the organization of measures for the formation of library and course education in the 1910s. The contribution to the development of library education by Ukrainian theoreticians and practitioners of librarianship L. B. Khavkina, K. I. Rubinsky, O. O. Pokrovsky,O. A. Diedrichson, S. O. Siropolko and others is analyzed in detail. Conclusions. It was found out that L. B. Havkina is the founder of domestic library education, because it was she who took practical steps to initiate the professional training of librarians following the example of the USA and Great Britain. The center for the development of professional training of librarians in Ukraine became the Kharkiv Society of Literacy, whose leading task was to create a network of public book collections. content-wise, the programs were built on the basis of an organic combination of library disciplines with general educational and socio-political disciplines, and the level of training of the course participants was not inferior to the university level. It has been proven that at the beginning of the 20th century library courses became a unique phenomenon in the life of Ukrainian society, because they were created thanks to a public initiative and supported by the zemstvo, they were supported and improved by the librarians themselves.
