Abstract: The purpose of the article is to investigate the library activity of the famous Ukrainian M. I. Storozhenko (1836–1906) – a prominent literary historian, Shakespeare scholar, Shevchenko scholar, who, due to the realities of the social and political reality of that time, realized himself as a specialist abroad, worked as a librarian in Moscow and Rumyantsev for ten years public museums. The methodology of the article is based on using the principle of historicism, scientific objectivity and systematicity; we also applied biographical and problem-thematic methods. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that, for the first time, it examines in detail, based on the memories of his contemporaries, the library activity of the outstanding literary critic M. I. Storozhenko, who, despite adverse historical circumstances, preserved the national identity of a Ukrainian and became a successful authoritative specialist, known in the world. Conclusions. The main areas of activity of M. I. Storozhenko can be defined as follows: scientist, teacher, librarian. His ten-year work in the library became an important page in its history. He directed his rich scientific and teaching experience to the development of the library business, reformed the work of the reading room, and initiated the creation of a reference library at it. During the work of M. I. Storozhenko, the library’s unique fund grew significantly, a modern reference and search apparatus was formed at the time, and the scope and list of services provided to readers were expanded. It is substantiated that the important areas of scientific, informational and cultural activity of M. I. Storozhenko were his work as a consultant, popularizer of foreign fiction and scientific literature, reference publications, contacts with colleagues, specialists from various fields. It has been proven that M. I. Storozhenko occupies a worthy place among cultural and educational Ukrainian figures of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, who influenced the development of library work and the education of an educated reader through their activities, therefore his figure should occupy a major place in the national cultural space.
