Bohdan Lepky’s book heritage in the fight for creation of a new cultural narrative of Ukraine

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to present the creative work of B. Lepky, stored in the funds of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, which have not yet been the subject of specialist research, to reveal the Ukrainian studies component of the educational theme of his texts, to emphasize the importance of the artist’s works for the formation of the national identity of Ukrainians, to note the European roots of the writer’s creativity. The research methodology is based on the use of the principle of historicism, objective and comparative analysis of the writer’s texts selected from the collection of the Department of Foreign Ukrainian Studies of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, where his focus is on topics of the history of Ukraine Scientific novelty. The content of B. Lepky’s texts was considered a valuable cultural asset for the formation of Ukrainian identity in the new historical conditions. The European roots of the writer’s creativity are being studied. It was noted that B. Lepky’s books provide an opportunity to rethink the reality in which we are now, and help create new promising directions for the development of societies. The conclusions state that the publications of B. Lepky ("Aeneid" by I. Kotlyarevskyi with his preface, comments, notes; the epic novel "Mazepa", etc.), which describe a deep Ukrainian archetype and accumulated great lessons of history for modern Ukrainians in the times of Russia’s new war against Ukraine, are rare and relevant retrospective publications for understanding the modern history, which, as a source, are important for their symbolic meaning and content. The semantic components of the materials published in them form the mentality of the population. They contribute to the cultural socialization of citizens, transmit hereditary moral and cultural norms, form collective historical memory, help people to connect with the national and cultural heritage, and to establish the Ukrainian version of the history of Ukraine.
