Byzantologist, researcher of Ukrainian and Slavic studies Ihor Ševčenko (1922–2009): on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his birth in the V. I. Vernadskyі National Library of Ukraine

Section: Library funds and user services

Abstract: The aim of the article is to reveal the content and composition of the book exhibition in the V. I. Vernadskyі National Library of Ukraine (VNLU), dedicated to the outstanding scientist Igor Shevchenko, Byzantologist, Slavist, Ukrainian scholar and representing his scientific heritage as a representative of Ukrainian and world science of the 20th– early 21st centuries, his contribution to the development of the humanities, cooperation with scientific and educational institutions of Ukraine and dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the scientist on February 10, 1922. The research methodology is based on the use of the principle of historicism and objectivity, chronological, historical comparative, biographical and bibliographic methods, analysis and synthesis of the composition of his book collection from the VNLU fonds. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the scientific publications of Igor Shevchenko, which make up a collection of his published works, as well as those associated with his name, are presented by the Department of Foreign Ukrainian Studies of the VNLU for wide acquaintance for the first time. The collaboration of the scientist with scientific and educational institutions of Ukraine in the late XX – early XXI centuries is revealed. The conclusions state that the scientific works of I. Shevchenko and bibliographic publications dedicated to him by various scientists about his contribution in the development of science, make it possible to trace his life path, his formation and development as a scientist and Ukrainian figure, to establish the significance of his contribution to Ukrainian and world science. The exhibition reveals the book heritage of the scientist, which for a long time before independence was notin the public domain for the wide scientific community in Ukraine. The value of this bookish decline is significant for further development of historical and philological studies in Ukraine.
