The Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921 in the Memoirs of the Representatives of a Political Emigration

Section: To the 100th anniversary of Ukrainian revolution (1917 – 1921)

Abstract: Individual titles of dissertation memoirs about the revolutionary events in Ukraine in 1917 – 1921, which are stored at the Foreign Ukrainica department’s fund of the Book Science Institute of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, are analyzed. Memories and reflections of the active participants in the liberation struggles, who, following the revolution, became political emigrants in different countries of the world, are an important source to explore the theme, revealing the fundamental differences between the Ukrainian and Russian revolutions and emphasizing its state-building nature. The analysis of diaspora memoirs reveals a vision of the events by its participants who were involved in installing the models of national statehood generated by revolutionary events: democratic, conservative, left-democratic and liberal-democratic. The comprehension of the sources of the Ukrainian revolution created in the diaspora makes it possible to revive the objective history of Ukraine, provides it with exemption from ideological myths. It has been observed that the diaspora’s memoir publications devoted to the national liberation struggle of Ukrainians of 1917 - 1921 are an important background for further presentation of the history of the Ukrainian revolution of the first quarter of the twentieth century. These publications contain significant factual material that enables an opportunity for further thorough reveals of the course of revolution, thereby to establish new names of the combatants for nationhood, to discover their full life paths.
