Bibliographic Indexes to the History of the Ukrainian People’s National Liberation Struggle (1917–1921), the First Half of the 20th Century

Section: To the 100th anniversary of ukrainian revolution (1917–1921)

Abstract: The paper is dedicated to bibliographic indexes to the history of the Ukrainian liberation movement (1917–1921). Bibliographic indexes published in Ukraine, the USSR and abroad in the first half of the 20th century are analyzed. They cover bibliographical data on the Ukrainian revolution and outstanding revolutionaries. Special attention is paid to the ideological and methodological principles applied in their compiling as well as changes in their structure, content and informational filling. Bibliographic reviews, lists and indexes that were published in the USSR in the 1920s and early 1930s, as well as the activities of research institutions that prepared bibliographic works during the revolutionary period, are analyzed. Bibliographic indexes published in the USSR in the 20s – early 30s of the 20th century include sources that reflect views of various political forces on the revolutionary events. Bibliographic indexes published in the USSR, particularly in the Soviet Ukraine, in the 30s and 40s have a marked ideological orientation and strictly adhere to the principle of the communist party supremacy. In the interwar period, researches on these issues were actively conducted abroad by emigrants as well as in the regions of the Western Ukraine, particularly those that were part of Poland. The results of the research show that in the first half of the 20-th century a number of bibliographic lists and indexes of various forms and genres were published, reflecting directly or indirectly the facts on the national liberation movement of the Ukrainian people during the revolutionary period, based on the views of various political forces that acted during the years of revolution. Today these indexes have become an important source of data on the national liberation movement of the Ukrainian people.

Keywords: historical bibliography, national liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people, Ukrainian revolution of 1917 – 1921, bibliographic reviews, lists and indexes published in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century.
