Experience of working with personal collections: the history of origin and reconstruction of the library of Fedir Vovk

Section: From the experience of libraries of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to continue the study of the history of the personal library of Fedir Vovk in the context of its origin, fate, and historical and book studies reconstruction based on a comprehensive analysis of the book collection, archival and published sources. The article demonstrates the experience of the Scientific Library of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the personal library of Fedir Vovk; indicates the stages of institutional affiliation of the collection; describes approaches to identifying copies of the collection in the collection and creating an electronic catalog of the collection.The research methodology is based on the general scientific principles of objectivity and comprehensiveness, and is based on the methods of historical research: comparative and historical, retrospective, historical and chronological. The author also used book studies and bibliographic methods. The scientific novelty of the article is that, despite some coverage of certain aspects of F. Vovk’s personal book collection in previous studies, it still arouses the interest of researchers, as many aspects of its existence remain unexplored. Researchers are still discovering copies of this collection stored in various institutions. Conclusions. The article deals with the history of the origin and reconstruction of the personal book collection of Fedir Vovk, which is stored in the funds of the Scientific Library of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and presents the author’s experience of working with the collection. The author emphasizes the significant role of Oleksandr Alesho in the history of transportation of F. Vovk’s scientific heritage to Ukraine and his role in the creation of the Museum (Cabinet) of Anthropology and Ethnology named for prof. F. Vovk. The movement of the collection as an integral part of the library fund and its existence in Ukrainian institutions, in particular in the Scientific Library of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, is studied. It is determined that the collection is dominated by scientific literature. It also includes journalistic publications, textbooks, periodicals, and fiction. The studied part of the collection consists mainly of publishing products of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and reflects the general trends of socio-political, cultural, and scientific life. In the process of visual research and attribution of provenance, 544 copies of publications from F. Vovk’s library were found, out of a probable total of 3804 copies. Today it is the largest known part of his library.
