Abstract: The purpose of the article is to study the main trends in the functioning of national libraries: expanding their functions in the field of digitalization and accessibility, openness to international cooperation, integration of new technologies, preservation of linguistic and cultural identity by means of development and functioning of authoritative work. Research methodology. Ananalysis of the current state of responsibility of national libraries for the creation and support of national authoritative files is carried out. It is proved that authoritative work in national libraries functions in various formats as a service for the cataloguing process and the organization of searches in various library and information arrays. Scientific novelty. The need for the creation of authoritative files by national libraries is substantiated, which, in the context of integration and development of a single methodology for authoritative work, will acquire the status of asingle national authoritative file for presentation in search engines of international identifiers. Conclusions. The outlined characteristics of national libraries emphasize their responsibility and mission to fulfill a complex of tasks of the information, cultural and scientific research vector for the development of each country. Awareness of the functions of the national library is important for everyone who works in the library: from planning directions of scientific work to the development and implementation of all library processes in accordance with international standards. The need for the national bibliographic agency/library to establish an authoritative form of the surnames of authors and the names of collective authors of its country and to promote the creation of a national AF in accordance with the recommendations of the UNESCO intergovernmental conference of 1974 is emphasized. The creation of a system of authoritative files is one of the most important factors in the functioning and development of the ABIS of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. With the goal of bringing the authoritative work of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine closer to modern information methods in the web environment, traditional "authoritative fields" are supplemented with international identifiers of search systems ISNI, VIAF, WorldCat, Wikidata, referring to the principle of information scientific internationalization.
