Social communications and scientific journals: the need for engagement and new opportunities

Section: LIbrary affair and science in the conditions of martial law in Ukraine

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to identify and illustrate the system of social communication tools and information resources that can be associated with scientific periodicals and to outline their importance for the constant increase of visibility of the results obtained by scientific institutions and popularising knowledge in the virtual space. The methodology includes the use of several general scientific methods – a systematic approach to the review of available material, including regulatory documents as the main one, and a method of generalisation to formulate the conclusions of the article and some recommendations based on them. Scientific novelty. The importance of social communication practices and the involvement of scientific journals as electronic information resources in them from a perspective of their importance not only for the popularisation of knowledge, but also for increasing the visibility and rating of scientific institutions and improving the results of state certification, in particular, is considered for the first time. Conclusions. This study suggests that scientists in Ukraine and abroad havegreat possibilities in using existing social networks, information and communication platforms, and other open access resources, as through them the scientific community makes a visible impact on society. The best way to collect all materials and information related to a particular scientific result (open data, preprints, announcements, or records of events, etc.) is to collect them on the websites of scientific journals. For this purpose, the metadata pages of articles should include a "Related Data" field, where the relevant links should be placed. The same information should also be included in the printed version of the article to be displayed in paper copies and full-text files of articles. This will increase the visibility of the results obtained by scientists and scientific institutions, as well as the popularisation of knowledge in the virtual space.

Keywords: scientific periodical, scientific journal website, electronic information product, social communications, electronic communications system.
