Censorship as a Means of Control and Restriction of Periodical Press Distribution in Ukraine

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to pay attention to the issue of censorship as a means of control and restriction of the distribution of periodical press in Ukraine. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, and systematization. The research employs methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization and a retrospective approach to define the characteristic features and functional aspects of censorship in overseeing the activities of the periodical press. The scientific novelty. The article represents comprehensive informationon the history of censorship, its forms and methods, and its development in an in separable connection with the tasks of socio-political, socio-economic and cultural development of society. The main stages of press censorship are identified and characterized, as well as the role of state and spiritual authorities in controll and restricting press distribution, particularly in Ukraine. Conclusions. The conducted study allows to assert that censorship significantly influenced the activities of all Ukrainian newspapers and magazines. The results of the study show that the most favourable conditions for the activity of the periodical press in Ukraine were during the Provisional Government, the Ukrainian Central Rada, at the end of perestroika in the USSR, with the establishment of Ukraine as a sovereign state. The strictest control over the activity of periodicals was during the Russian Empire, the Ukrainian State of 1918, the UNR Directory, the Denikin regime, the Soviet government in Ukraine, and the Second World War.
