Intercultural dialogue between Ukraine and Austria: historical traditions and contemporary practices

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyse the historical background and current practices of Ukrainian-Austrian intercultural dialogue, and to identify the key mechanisms, actors, and institutional frameworks shaping bilateral cooperation in the fields of culture, education, and science. Research methodology. The study employs historical and structural analysis, as well as the comparative method. An interdisciplinary approach is applied to examining Ukrainian-Austrian cooperation across academic, cultural, and institutional domains. Scientific novelty. The evolution of bilateral relations is revealed from the shared heritage of the Habsburg Monarchy to modern models of cultural diplomacy and strategic partnership, particularly in the context of Ukraine’s European integration course and the ongoing challenges of war. An interdisciplinary review of Ukrainian-Austrian intercultural cooperation is conducted, including within the context of international library interaction. Conclusions. The shared historical and cultural heritage is identified as a unifying strategic factor that significantly contributes to the development of stable Ukrainian-Austrian relations. Despite geopolitical instability and external threats, particularly those caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine, the implementation of joint cultural, scientific, and educational initiatives, the strengthening of inter-institutionalties, and the advancement of library cooperation with Austria contribute to the consolidation of Ukrainian cultural identity, the deepening of cooperation, and the affirmation of shared European values. Intercultural dialogue emergesas a dynamic instrument of cultural resilience and soft power, capable of fostering mutual understanding, supporting democratic development, and promoting Ukraine’s integration into the European cultural space.
