Mass-circulation press of Ukraine in 1950s – at the beginning of the 1990s peculiarities of functioning and content

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to cover peculiarities of functioning of mass-circulation newspapers of Ukraine of 1950s–1990s and review the content of the publications. Methodologic basis of the study comprises of the principle of historicism, analysis of historical sources, as well as historical and chronological, and comparative approaches. Scientific novelty. Mass-circulation press is considered as a distinct type of press, a particular phenomenon in the history of press and a source to study the history of companies, organizations, educational institutions against the background of social and political situation shaped in the period of 1950s – at the beginning of the 1990s. The process of the development of the multi-circulation press during the 1950s–1990s is revealed, the content of the publications is characterized. The conclusions state that the relation between content of mass-circulation newspapers and ideology in the period of 1950s–1990s is extremely strong. In the Soviet period a newspaper was used as an instrument of ideological influence on readers, means to fight with negative (according to criteria of the certain time) social phenomena. Socialistic themes and vocabulary prevailing in publications of the Soviet period of development of mass-circulation press changed for market ones at the end 1980s, and in the years of Ukraine’s independence they have become a repeater of a new ideology, namely, construction of an independent democratic state. Mass-circulation publications have been reformatted, renewed and continued to exist as contemporary corporate press.
